Tooth Extraction

We provide gentle tooth extractions and offer tooth replacement options to help you restore your smile.

Extractions

Sometimes a tooth can no longer be “saved”. They may be too broken down, cracked or infected and have to be removed. We will extract the tooth for you with minimal expense & discomfort. If you would like to have your wisdom teeth removed, we work closely with a specialist that we will refer you to.

Conditions That May Require a Tooth Extraction

If you have injuries involving your head and neck, it is important to seek immediate medical treatment.

Common conditions requiring a dental extraction:

  • Non-restorable fractures
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Unsuccessful root canal therapy
  • A tooth broken at the gumline
  • Trauma due to an accident
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Recomended by orthodontist before wearing braces

If you need a tooth replacement, we can plan for it prior to the extraction so that we have a plan in place to restore your smile.

Personalised Dental Treatment Options

Our dentists will explain all of your options and help you make a good decision regarding your oral health. We understand that many of our patients have concerns about dental extractions. Will it hurt? What will happen to my oral health? How will it affect the appearance of my smile?

What to do after extraction?

1. Control Bleeding –After your extraction, it’s normal to experience some bleeding. We’ll provide a gauze pad to bite down on, which helps form a clot in the socket. Keep it in place for at least 30-45 minutes. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and apply gentle pressure.

2. Manage Pain and Swelling –Mild discomfort is common after an extraction. Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed or any prescribed medication from your dentist. To reduce swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals for the first 24 hours.

3. Protect the Blood Clot –Avoid activities that could dislodge the blood clot, such as:

  • Drinking through a straw
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Spitting forcefully
  • Rinsing your mouth vigorously

These actions can lead to a condition called dry socket, which delays healing and can be quite painful.

4. Stick to a Soft Diet –For the first few days, opt for soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups, and smoothies. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that may irritate the extraction site. Gradually reintroduce solid foods as you feel comfortable.

5. Keep the Area Clean –Maintain good oral hygiene, but be gentle around the extraction site. Avoid brushing or flossing directly over the socket for the first 24 hours. After that, rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) several times a day to keep the area clean and promote healing.

6. Follow-Up Appointments –We may schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your healing progress. Be sure to attend and let us know if you experience any unusual symptoms such as severe pain, persistent bleeding, or signs of infection like swelling or fever.
